Emerald, green Beryl

The stone of successful love; green was the color of Venus in ancient Rome. Venus is the goddess of beauty and life. Also, green is the holy color of Islam.

The name emerald comes from the Greek 'smaragdos' via the Old French 'esmeralde', and really just means 'green gemstone'. The oldest known emerald finds were once made near the Red Sea in Egypt. These gemstone mines exploited by Egyptain pharaohs between 3000 and 1500 B.C. and later referred to as Cleopatra's Mines. Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl. Beryl's other color varieties include aquamarine, morganite, heliodor, and goshenite. The rest of beryl are simply referred to by their color, such as red beryl. The most important value determiner is the color of an emerald. The best color of an emerald is "emerald green." It is not too yellow and not too blue; it is not pale or dark, but intense and bright. Typically, the finest colored emeralds come from Columbia.
